Core Training

Information Meetings
To become a CASA volunteer, you must first come to an information meeting. There you will have an opportunity to have your questions addressed and hear staff describe the roles and responsibilities of a CASA in detail. You will also be able to obtain an application form and training schedule. Once your application is received, you will be contacted by the local volunteer coordinator to schedule an interview.

Training
Once an applicant is accepted, CASA core training consists of 30+ hours of classroom training, plus homework and court observations. Training topics include Alaska law,  child development, awareness, substance abuse, domestic violence, family dynamics, and effective advocacy. Once assigned to a case, the CASA volunteer has constant support and supervision from the Office of Public Advocacy (OPA) staff. The CASA program also provides ongoing training for volunteers to update them on legal developments and current issues. CASA volunteers are expected to complete 12 hours of continuing education each year.
